SCIENCE: In its official position, the European Respiratory Society condemns heated tobacco!

Should we still have doubts about the heated tobacco devices offered by the tobacco industry? If the entire scientific community does not yet seem able to decide on the subject, the European Respiratory Society (ERS) has just changed its position on this much-maligned product.

HEATED TOBACCO, A "TOXIC AND ADDICTIVE" PRODUCT WITHOUT PROOF OF RISK REDUCTION!

We will no longer keep the suspense in analyzing the position of the European Respiratory Society (European Society of Pneumologists) which is quite clear: The heated tobacco is a product « toxic and addictive "Which does not bring" no evidence of risk reduction"

In its report, the ERS states that research from the tobacco industry claims a 90 to 95% reduction in damage to heated products. Yet the ERS clearly denounces a fool's game:

« Manufacturers of tobacco products have not informed the public that certain studies have revealed the presence of harmful substances at high concentrations: particulates, tar, acetaldehyde (carcinogen), acrylamide (potentially carcinogenic) and acrolein metabolite (toxic and irritating). Some studies have found much higher concentrations of formaldehyde (potentially carcinogenic) in heated tobacco products than in conventional cigarettes.

Historically, there is strong evidence that studies by the tobacco industry or by researchers funded by the tobacco industry cannot be trusted. Former employees and contractors have detailed irregularities in the clinical experiments conducted by the industry on heated tobacco products.

Independent research shows that acrolein (toxic and irritant) is reduced by only 18%, formaldehyde (potentially carcinogenic) by 26%, benzaldehyde (potentially carcinogenic) by 50%, and TSNA (carcinogens) equal to a fifth of those of conventional combustion cigarettes. In addition, the potentially carcinogenic substance, acenaphthene, is almost three times higher than in conventional cigarettes and the levels of nicotine and tar are almost identical to those of a conventional cigarette.

An experimental study in animals showed that exposure to iQOS resulted in a 60% decrease in blood vessel function, which is comparable to that caused by cigarette smoke. Additionally, a study found that iQOS users may be forced to smoke at a rapid rate, which could lead to increased consumption of carbonyls (potentially carcinogenic) and nicotine, leading to a high level of dependence on the drug. nicotine.«

For these reasons, the European Respiratory Society states: “ While heated tobacco products may be less harmful to smokers, they are nonetheless both harmful and highly addictive, and there is a risk that smokers will switch to heated tobacco products instead of quitting. . The ERS cannot recommend any product that is harmful to the lungs and human health. »

To the European Respiratory Society heated tobacco :

  • Is harmful and addictive
  • Undermines the desire of smokers to quit
  • Sape the desire of ex-smokers to stay out of smoking
  • Is a temptation for non-smokers and minors
  • Imposes a risk of normalization of smoking
  • Imposes a risk of dual use with conventional cigarettes

The position of the ERS is already debated on various social networks. Indeed, some people denounce a certain bias, the proposed data being selected to put forward this position while ignoring all the cases which could contradict it.
