SCIENCE: Tobacco without nicotine, a viable alternative to vape?

It's a great tool to put an end to tobacco and the latest studies prove it again, the vape works! Yet new products continue to emerge and today German researchers claim that they have successfully grown tobacco plants that contain 99.7% less nicotine than normal. A real alternative to vaping?

MORE NICOTINE BUT ALWAYS COMBUSTION

What if the solution to quitting smoking is in nicotine-free cigarettes? This is the idea of a team of scientists from the University of Dortmund (Germany) who published the results of their studies in the journal Plant Biotechnology Journal. They managed to do push tobacco plants that contain 99.7% less of Nicotine than normal.

To obtain this result, they used the famous technique of genetic modification: the technique CRISPR-Cas9. Using the "genetic scissors", the researchers deactivated enzymes responsible for the production of nicotine. As a result, the latest modified version of this plant would only contain 0.04 milligrams of nicotine per gram.

Yet, although low in nicotine, cigarettes are still harmful. They contain other carcinogenic substances and combustion also makes them dangerous. Nevertheless, it may well help smokers to quit smoking.. And the results are there, according to Trust My Science, of  studies showed that smokers who consumed cigarettes with a very low nicotine content did not start smoking again afterwards.

The nicotine-free cigarette could be a solution for people who have not been seduced by electronic cigarettes as long as they are used without combustion.
