SOCIETY: More than 60% of French people think that e-cigarettes help reduce tobacco consumption.

Over time, it seems that vaping is establishing itself as a real risk reduction tool in the minds of the French population. Indeed, according to a recent poll 60% of French people think that e-cigarettes are effective in reducing their tobacco consumption.

A POSITION BUT ALSO A LACK OF INFORMATION

Is vaping effective in ending smoking? This is a question that has been asked for years and despite the many studies and statements published, the answer is hardly convincing. However, the e-cigarette seems in part to have won the confidence of the French population. Indeed, in a recent poll Odoxa realized for France Vapotage and published Monday, May 18, we learn that six in ten French people believe that the e-cigarette helps reduce tobacco consumption.

According to this survey, 77% of those polled believe that the public authorities do not provide enough information on the subject. They are also 84% to find that the government should better regulate the use of the e-cigarette but also encourage it as an alternative to tobacco for smokers (55%).

The reasons for this switch to e-cigarettes are still the same: 56% of respondents are mainly looking to save money when they start vaping. This is mainly the case for women (63%) and CSP- (64%). Finally, some vapers want to take advantage of the e-cigarette to bother those around them less (30%) while, for others, it is an opportunity to be able to consume nicotine anytime and anywhere (23% ).

A SCEPTICISM OF THE EFFICACY OF VAPE TO STOP SMOKING

While most French people think that switching to vaping can help reduce their tobacco consumption, they are more skeptical about its effectiveness in stopping completely: only 45% of them believe it. Those who are more convinced are the exclusive vapers (92%). Then come daily vapers (91%), tobacco smokers (55%) and business leaders (54%).

"The difference we see between the French and vapers is not new and can be explained. The skepticism of a good part of our fellow citizens towards the electronic cigarette is not only linked to their doubts about its effectiveness. Indeed, a majority of them still judge that it is as risky (55%) or even more risky (9%) than tobacco", analyze the pollsters.

We notice that it is especially the seniors who have a bad image of the e-cigarette: 62% of the 65 years and over believe that the electronic cigarette is as dangerous as the classic one. Conversely, CSP + and the highest incomes (38%), the most qualified (40%), tobacco smokers (37%) and vapers (65%) tend to think that vaping is “less risky than tobacco".
