Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur is the region of France where one smokes the most and the Île-de-France the one that counts the least of smokers, according to a cartography of the smoking published Tuesday by the health authorities.

A little over a quarter (27%) 18-75 years daily smokes in France, according to the latest data from Public Health France. A national average that hides wide disparities, as shown a map published on Tuesday by the health agency that provides figures by region.
While Île-de-France and Pays-de-la-Loire are the most virtuous regions, with respectively 21% and 23% of smokers, four regions are above the national average. These are Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (32,2%), Hauts-de-France (30,5%), Occitanie (30,3%) and Greater East (30,1%).
«These differences are related to several factors. The good performance of Île-de-France could thus be explained by the fact that the socio-economic level is globally higher there than in other regions. Thus, if the daily smoking in the Hauts-de-France and the Grand-Est is higher than the national average for 18-75 years, this is not the case for young 17 years. In these two regions, they are respectively 23,7% and 23,5% to smoke each day, while the national average is 25,1%.
On the other hand, Hauts-de-France and Grand-Est are among the regions where intensive smoking (at least ten cigarettes a day during the last thirty days) is the strongest in young people aged 17 (6,7% and 6,3%, for a national average of 5,2%). For this age group, Normandy and Corsica are the regions where smoking is most prevalent if we take into account both daily smoking (30% and 31%) and intensive smoking (7,5% and 11% ).
It is estimated that 73.000 people die every year in France because of tobacco, which causes cancers (the most important of which are lung cancer), cardiovascular diseases and diseases.
