TOBACCO: What is the relationship between smoking cessation and sexuality?

The latest sexological studies devoted to the effects of tobacco on sexuality are unanimous. Tobacco causes deleterious effects on sexuality in both men and women. As a recognized cardio-vascular risk factor, tobacco mainly promotes erectile dysfunction in men and lubrication problems in women. But not only.

A first in France, the campaign Me (s) without tobacco has just started and the good reasons to quit smoking - beyond personal motivations - are now part of a framework of solidarity and community public health. The techniques to dare to take up the challenge are known and recognized, the tools made available are not lacking (note in this regard that the vape can significantly help to quit smoking as regularly reminded by Dr. William Lowenstein, President of SOS Addictions). Further argument, when we know the effects of tobacco on sexuality, the reasons for putting aside cigarettes can be reinforced. Let it be said, tobacco and sexual arousal do not mix. So, quitting smoking to enjoy your sexuality better? Why not try…

TABACO-MALE SEXFri

In men, the prevalence of erectile dysfunction (for long-term regular smokers) is 40% compared to 28% in the general population[1]. This is explained by the fact that an erection requires good blood supply to the spongy and cavernous bodies of the penis. Knowing that tobacco, nicotine, carbon monoxide and certain free radicals act as vasoconstrictors, they are in fact registered as antagonists to vasodilation sine qua non to erection. The latest epidemiological studies carried out in Europe suggest that smokers are twice as prone to erectile dysfunction than non-smokers.[2]. Because tobacco acts directly on the blood vessels, it gradually causes obstruction of the penile arteries necessary for the good quality of the erection. In view of this observation, erectile dysfunctions (and in particular the case of absence of a morning erection) may represent a “harbinger” indicator of more extensive cardiovascular pathologies (damage to the coronary arteries in the case of coronary artery disease. for example). From a sexological point of view, the elements to remember are that regular consumption of tobacco can alter in 40% of cases the sexual mechanics of the man and reduce by 25% minimum the quality of his erection.

In women, tobacco causes alterations in vaginal lubrication during the phase of sexual arousal. In addition to the cases of vaginal dryness regularly reported by women smokers, the vascular consequences associated with smoking are increased tenfold in the event of taking estrogen-progestogen contraception (the risk of cardiovascular disease is then multiplied by twenty). Recent studies have also demonstrated the impact of tobacco in cases of fertility, obstetric complications and early menopause.[3].
