TAIWAN: The government is concerned about the increase in vaping among young people.

In Taiwan, the Ministry of Health recently presented new data on vaping claiming that more than 52 000 adolescents routinely used electronic cigarettes. A figure that worries and could push the government to regulate or ban vaping.

52 000 ADOLESCENTS USE REGULARLY ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES

A survey launched by the Ministry of Health recently revealed that the use of electronic cigarettes increased from 2% to 3,7% among middle school students and from 2,1 to 4,8% among high school students between 2013 and 2015. According to the Minister, there are currently more than 100 adult vapers (over the age of 00) in the country.

If these figures seem trivial, this is not at all the case for the Ministry of Health of Taiwan which seems worried. According to the minister, electronic cigarettes are highly addictive and their long-term effects are not yet known, which still represents a very significant risk for young people. Following receipt of these figures, the ministry decided to immediately look into the problem.

Taiwanese lawmakers continue to discuss how e-cigarettes should be regulated. While legislation is currently pending in the Executive Yuan, it is not excluded that vaping is subject to certain bans.
