At a government meeting broadcast on 5 January, the Turkmen president, a trained dentist, demanded massive measures to eradicate tobacco and threatened to dismiss the director of the anti-drug agency, whose action had been ruled insufficient in this respect.

If you feel like you want to take the cigarettes have disappeared from the shelves, stores now sell packs of cigarettes under the mantle. However, merchants who dare to violate the new law and who are caught in the act of selling cigarettes a fine of more than 1 800 euros. An amount equivalent to ten months salary.

Like its neighbor Bhutan, which banned the sale of tobacco more than 10 years ago, Turkmenistan has seen the development of a parallel trade where the price of packets can reach the sum of 12 euros and where the sale of cigarettes is even made to the unit.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the dictatorship of the Middle East lists only 8% of smokers. A result obviously insufficient in the eyes of its president, Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedow.
