TUTORIAL: All about the e-cigarette / Li-ion battery relationship

Vape is not necessarily easy for everyone, especially when it comes to addressing the issue of batteries (or accumulators), these “batteries” that allow your vaping devices to work. So instead of doing anything, no matter how and ending up with serious injuries, you might as well take the time to learn how to use your sources of energy. For this, we offer here a tutorial on "Li-ion" batteries offered by Pascal Macarty, an expert vapoteur in the field.

A battery, whatever its technology, or even a battery, is a concentrated energy source that needs a conductive element to release its energy.

It is important, if not vital, to watch:

  • Never put one or more batteries in your pockets (presence of keys, parts that can short circuit)
  • Always store or transport your batteries in boxes keeping them separated from each other

  • To make the necessary calculations and measurements to check that the assembly carried out is not outside the safety zone of the battery (current too high, short circuit).

  • To avoid any contact with metal objects, liquids and to avoid any shock. Never use a battery that has suffered a shock that has deformed it.

  • Always respect the polarity indicated in the MOD or in the user manual.

  • To call on a specialist for the initiation to the use of a mechanical MOD.

  • Always lock your mechanical or electro MOD when not in use.

  • Pay attention to the positive pin of the atomizer when using a mechanical hybrid MOD (the positive pin must come out sufficiently – 1 to 2 mm – from the 510 connector of the atomizer, and it must be fixed and above all not on spring). Seek advice from a specialist.

  • To take care of your batteries: clean the contacts of the battery and the MOD, if black spots of oxidation appear (especially on mechanical MOD), call a specialist!

  • To replace the protective plastic sheath (wrap) if the original one is damaged, and to put a label allowing to know what model of battery it is, characteristics, etc… -> call on a specialist! Do not use the battery if the wrap is damaged, torn.

  • To dispose of defective batteries in containers provided for this purpose, not in domestic garbage cans.

  • Do not put a battery in your mouth (or in any other orifice).

  • Do not hold a battery by its poles, but by its protective plastic (fingers are not always clean, and can cause oxidation of the pole contacts).

  • Do not use 18350 batteries or other "small" sizes for uses involving strong currents.

  • It is often said that putting several batteries in series is dangerous, and this is indeed the case, but paralleling is just as dangerous without insulation between each battery (see § 4 -> short-circuit by construction dendritic, and § 10 dedicated series and //).

  • Do not store a fully charged battery: a 100% charged battery stored for a few months before being used will discharge a little, and above all, its lifespan will be affected.

  • Do not leave a Li-Ion battery in a car in the sun, or in luggage in the hold of an airplane: very high risk of fire or explosion! (This concerns the ecig, batteries for laptops, tablets, smartphones… read the warnings of your devices to find out if they are equipped with a Li-Ion battery).

  • Make sure that the poles of your batteries are clean and undamaged: if "black spots" appear on the negative pole, this is a sign of oxidation by electric flashes, creating additional resistance in the circuit (heating of the switch on MOD mech).

The complete battery tutorial Li-ion "To Pascal Macarty is available at this address. You will find many pages there to learn how to use its energy sources safely. This document is intended for all vapers wishing to deepen the subject of batteries. This 22-page document is a compilation of knowledge, accumulated within the community, but also through research and reflection, reading datasheets and blogs, watching videos, tutorials, etc ...

Do not hesitate to share it with those around you, do not forget that the good use of batteries allows you to avoid incidents and therefore to avoid some of the disinformation about the e-cigarette.
