UNITED KINGDOM: Towards a reassessment of the legal age to buy tobacco

In the UK, a recent report calls for the legal age to buy tobacco products to be raised each year, currently set at 18, until eventually no one can buy tobacco in the country. . As a reminder, this certainly aggressive policy would be accompanied by a solution: vaping, which is often put forward in the country.

A REPORT TO END SMOKING IN THE COUNTRY

Raise the minimum age to buy cigarettes each year to eradicate them by 2030: this is the radical recommendation of a report submitted to the British government and published on Thursday, as young people's smoking has increased during the pandemic. This report, commissioned by the Ministry of Health to achieve this goal, suggests such an increase in the legal age for purchasing tobacco products, currently set at 18, until eventually no one can buy it in the country.

The British report also advises promoting electronic cigarettes to help smokers quit, improving prevention and increasing the budget for anti-smoking policies by an additional 125 million pounds per year (146 million euros).

As a reminder, the United Kingdom is a real example to follow in terms of reducing the risks of smoking. It is currently the only country that promotes vaping to the point of distributing it free of charge in hospitals.
