UNITED STATES: AAP wants reform to fight vaping among young people!

In the USA, AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) takes the notion of vape “epidemic” among young people very seriously. In order to fight against this phenomenon, it calls for regulation of tobacco products and e-cigarettes for young people in coordination with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

A POLICY TO "PROTECT YOUNG PEOPLE FROM THE EPIDEMIC"

This applies, to only to what kinds of products your potential customers buy, but also to the way these products are promoted through advertising and marketing content. American Academy of Pediatrics, the popularity of e-cigarettes has exploded over the past decade, becoming the most widely used "tobacco" product by young people. According to 2018 data, one in five high school students use e-cigarettes, a 75% increase from 2017.

The AAP says pediatricians can educate consumers and parents about the harms of these products. The goal would obviously be to coordinate with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to regulate tobacco products and electronic cigarettes that concern young people.

JUUL, THE GUILTY POINTE OF THE FINGER?

And like others the AAP seems to have found the culprit. According to them, electronic cigarettes encompass a wide variety of devices including popular brands such as JUUL. These would be marketed to young people through the promotion of sweet and fruity flavors and through the media as well as advertising strategies used successfully by the tobacco industry.

THEAmerican Academy of Pediatrics even goes further by stating that " E-liquids contain many toxic and carcinogenic substances " as " Nicotine, the main psychoactive component that is a highly addictive drug with adverse effects on health.

For the AAP, major gaps remain in the regulation of electronic cigarettes. She therefore continues to advocate for stricter regulations to protect young people from e-cigarettes: “ Regulations, legislation and counter-promotion are essential to reduce the potential risks to public health associated with the use of e-cigarettes.«
