In the United States, the new year does not only bring good things! Indeed, since January 1, 2018, vapers in the state of Delaware must do like smokers and pay a tax on e-liquids.
A TAX THAT COULD HAVE BEEN CATASTROPHIC FOR DELAWARE SHOPS
Since January 1, 2018, it is not only smokers who pay taxes but also vapers. As voted by the Delaware general assembly, an excise tax of 5 cents per milliliter of e-liquid is now imposed.
But the disaster has in fact been narrowly avoided! Indeed, at first, John Carney, the governor of Delaware had proposed a 30% tax on fruity e-liquids and many owners of vape shops were worried about the future. As a reminder, Pennsylvania had adopted a similar measure in 2016 with a 40% tax on e-liquids resulting in the closure of around 100 vape shops.
Finally, the Delaware general assembly set an excise tax of five cents per milliliter of e-liquid and the Carney governor signed the proposal in July 2017.
