Electronic cigarettes: a tax that could compromise public health

Because when it is perfectly said, there is no point in reinventing the wheel, we share the communication of our colleague OneShot Media!

Let's protect the future of electronic cigarettes

Paris, October 25, 2024,

Last week, an amendment was tabled by MP Charles de Courson to introduce a new tax on vaping products of 15 cents per millilitre, regardless of the nicotine concentration.

This amendment, although rejected this time, alerts us to the urgency of the situation. Oneshot Media, a media specializing in smoking cessation, wishes to raise awareness among the general public and political decision-makers about the dangers of this measure for public health.

Risk reduction: a necessary mobilization

The electronic cigarette is now one of the most effective methods for quitting smoking. According to numerous international studies, it significantly reduces the risks associated with tobacco and helps thousands of smokers to quit each year. While MP Charles de Courson seems to be aware of this effectiveness, it would seem that he does not want it to become popular.

By making vaping more expensive, there is a clear risk that many vapers will turn back to traditional cigarettes, which are much more harmful. But also, a risk of dissuading many smokers from embarking on the most effective smoking cessation method.

This tax would particularly affect the working classes, who have often opted for e-cigarettes not only for health reasons, but also to save money compared to tobacco. These users are increasingly turning to larger bottles in order to reduce costs. A tax of 15 cents per milliliter would make these large containers much more expensive, risking dissuading the most modest smokers from continuing their withdrawal via vaping and pushing them to return to traditional cigarettes.

Our commitment: Awareness and information through “Doctor, I quit”

As part of our awareness-raising mission, we recently launched a series of programs on Top Santé TV, entitled “Doctor, I stopped”. Hosted by Dr. Gérald Kierzek, a physician recognized for his expertise in the field of smoking cessation, this series aims to inform and support smokers in their efforts to quit smoking. Through clear and educational episodes, Dr. Kierzek addresses all aspects of nicotine and the different methods for quitting smoking, with a particular focus on risk reduction.

This initiative is a concrete illustration of our commitment to rigorous information and quality support for people who want to free themselves from tobacco. We are convinced that it is through education and awareness that we can change behaviors and reduce tobacco consumption in France.

A tax would only hamper these anti-smoking awareness efforts.

A call to action

Today we are appealing to all stakeholders: public health associations, vapers, healthcare professionals, and the media. Together, we must unite to protect the future of e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation tool. We are available to discuss with the government and relevant authorities to find solutions that continue to save the lives of thousands of smokers and ex-smokers.
