FRANCE: Strasbourg, the first city to ban smoking in its parks?

Today, the municipal council of Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin) should vote on a deliberation aiming to ban smoking in the city's parks and green spaces. It would then be a first in France.

Soon a breath of fresh air for parks et green spaces de Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin). On the agenda of the next city council on Monday 25 June 2018, the 71e deliberation, entitled " Tobacco-free parks: Strasbourg committed to the fight against smoking for the well-being of its inhabitants "Interpellates.

If this deliberation was voted, the Alsatian capital would become the first city in France to ban smoking in all parks and green spaces of a municipality, according to the League against cancer. The municipality continues its fight against smoking based on a first experiment set up in 2014. It was to ban tobacco in the playgrounds. The parks would be equipped with ashtrays at the entrance, to invite visitors to crush their cigarette before entering confined spaces. To this is added thefine for throwing butts on the floorwhich amounts to 68 Euros and which will be applicable from January 2019.

The city of Strasbourg is leading this fight to preserve the health of its inhabitants. Mediators will encourage referrals of smokers to networks of health professionals. On the other hand, elected officials of the city council reminds that a butt takes up to 12 years, sometimes even more, to decompose in nature, and only one of them can pollute up to 500 liters of drinking water.
