Zyn nicotine pouches: FDA green light despite health concerns

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved the sale of 20 Zyn nicotine pouch products, a first for the agency. The pouches, available in flavors including coffee, mint and menthol, are designed to be placed between the gum and lip, delivering nicotine without combustion or tobacco. The FDA's decision is based on data that suggests the products may help adult smokers reduce or quit traditional cigarette smoking. Nicotine pouches contain fewer harmful substances than cigarettes or some chewing tobacco products, reducing the risk of cancer and other serious diseases.

However, the approval has raised concerns, particularly about the potential appeal of these products to young people. While FDA data shows that use of nicotine pouches among teens remains low, critics have pointed out that appealing flavors could encourage a new generation to develop nicotine addiction. Political figures have also expressed concerns, calling for increased oversight of the marketing practices of these products.

In Europe, the situation is varied. Some nations have banned the sale of these pouches, while others are seeking to regulate them specifically. In Spain, for example, the Ministry of Health has proposed measures to regulate these products as part of the Comprehensive Plan for the Prevention and Control of Tobacco Use 2024-2027, establishing labeling and marketing requirements to protect public health and prevent consumption among young people.

It is important to note that while nicotine pouches may pose lower risks compared to traditional tobacco products, nicotine remains an addictive substance with potentially adverse health effects, including cardiovascular risks and impacts on brain development in young people. Health authorities recommend careful use and continued monitoring of these products on the market.
