In Australia, the wait was long and there was still hope for the final decision to be taken. Therapeutic Products Administration (Therapeutic Goods Administration) on the authorization or ban of nicotine for e-liquids. Finally, it is the disappointment and the frustration after the TGA decided to definitively ban nicotine for vaping products.
A DECISION AGAINST CURRENT: NO NICOTINE FOR VAPOTEURS!
Administration of therapeutic products has as expected rendered its final decision regarding the use of nicotine in electronic cigarettes. If the New Nicotine Alliance Australia had asked to exempt e-liquids containing low concentrations of nicotine from the Poison Table, the TGA preferred to remain in its position permanently banning nicotine for vaping products.
For two advocates of tobacco harm reduction, Australia totally denies a tool that could reduce the high number of deaths and illnesses caused by smoking.
«This goes against the growing evidence showing that vaping is much less harmful to users and those around them than tobacco smoke.Explains the Dr. Colin Mendelsohn, Associate Professor in the School of Public Health and Community Medicine at the University of New South Wales.
« Research and numerous experiments show that e-cigarettes with low concentrations of nicotine can play an important role in helping to quit smoking. Banning them without real evidence induces bad science and a malicious short-term policy ... »

BANNING THE NICOTINE ENTRAINE THE BLACK MARKET
Le Professor Riccardo Polosa from the University of Catania in Italy is currently visiting Australia and chairs a technical committee of European Union experts that develops vapor standards under the EU Tobacco Products Directive.
According to him, the best approach is to make these products available to adult smokers while setting reasonable and enforceable quality and safety standards to protect users and the community at large: “ Prohibiting nicotine e-liquids will simply drive the black market. The resulting unregulated market increases the risk of harm to users »
« Ten years of experience abroad has revealed that statements from opponents of electronic cigarettes are overestimated. There is no reliable evidence that e-cigarettes act as a gateway to smoking for children, or that they “renormalize” smoking.. »He declares
Simon Chapman, professor emeritus at the Sydney School of Public Health at the University of Sydney, who for his part welcomed an earlier TGA decision last month said " Australia has one of the lowest smoking rates among adults and youth. It has declined almost continuously since the 1960s, and especially since the 1980s. This has been achieved without e-cigarettes. »

THE REASONS FOR THE BAN ON NICOTINE FOR E-LIQUIDS
To justify his decision, Administration of therapeutic products to give several explanations:
- The potential risk of nicotine addiction associated with the use of electronic cigarettes.
- Lack of evidence regarding the long-term safety of exposure to nicotine using vaping devices
- Nicotine may cause nausea, vomiting, convulsions, bronchorrhea, high blood pressure, ataxia, tachycardia, headache, dizziness, confusion, agitation, restlessness, neuromuscular blockade, failure respiratory system and death from overdose.
- The proposed maximum amount of 900 mg of nicotine per pack is less than the estimated lower limit, resulting in a fatal outcome (500 mg to 1 g). There have been reports of unintentional ingestion of e-liquid by children with serious results in some cases.
- Excluding nicotine from Schedule 7 could lead to increased exposure to nicotine with e-cigarettes
- The use of a signal word "not to be sold to a person under the age of 18Is not likely to be effective unless this requirement is applied.
With this final decision of the TGA, Australia is therefore back to the starting point and will have to continue to fight to assert its right to vape nicotine e-liquids. Find the full report of the TGA at this address.
