AUSTRALIA: New WADA President remains opposed to e-cigarettes

Despite the recent authorization of nicotine e-liquids in New Zealand, the e-cigarette situation in Australia does not really seem to be settling. Indeed, the new president of the Australian Medical Association (AMA) recently made it clear that the official position vis-à-vis the e-cigarette would not change.

THE PRESIDENT OF WADA DOES NOT WANT TO ALIGN HIS POSITION WITH OTHER COUNTRIES!

While in Australia smoking is still very present, the new president of AMA (Australian Medical Association) has dashed some hopes by declaring " that absolutely nothing would change »Concerning the association's position on the e-cigarette.

Tony Bartone, told the newspaper The Australian "That there would therefore be no change in WADA's position" absolutely no »And this despite the fact that it is legal to use electronic cigarettes in the United States, the European Union, Canada and recently in New Zealand.

Yet even Cancer Council of Australia who opposes the introduction of the e-cigarette in the country has admitted that its use is significantly less dangerous than smoking.

« The consensus is very strongly in favor of e-cigarettes and shows that they are significantly less dangerous than classic cigarettes" , said Paul Grogan, Director of Policy, Cancer Council Australia. " It is a fact that we do not dispute " he added.

While millions of smokers have used e-cigarettes to quit tobacco and experts agree that they are much safer than smoking, in Australia more than three million people smoke and two in three will die of smoking-related illnesses.

However, Dr Bartone said the evidence showing the benefits of e-cigarettes was inconclusive. " As far as we are concerned, the use of e-cigarettes normalizes the act of "smoking" without really addressing the problem and the heart of the matter; that is, smoking has important health consequences ", did he declare.

Equally important is the lack of data on the risks of e-cigarettes, he added. " The products used sometimes contain harmful carcinogens and we do not have long-term data on the type of risk involved." , did he declare.
