La measure was planned and it is now effective in the 550 Belgian stations. After the ban on smoking on board, the entire Belgian railway area becomes non-smoking. It is therefore forbidden to smoke or vape throughout the station, including outdoors!
A FINE BETWEEN 50 AND 150€ IN CASE OF NON-RESPECT!
This measure entered into force on January 1, 2023 and concerns the 550 Belgian stations. According to SNCB, a tobacco-free environment protects passengers and railway staff from its harmful effects. This law also avoids throwing cigarette butts on the ground and therefore cleaning costs.
Nearly 7 out of 10 travelers say they are in favor of this change. Two trials, carried out in Mechelen in November 2021 and in Charleroi in May 2022, showed that this measure was well received and respected. Fines between 50 and 150 euros may be imposed in the event of non-compliance.
