CANADA: Instead of banning vaping flavors, the government should listen to doctors!

In Canada and more specifically in Quebec, the vaping situation is becoming more and more distressing to the point that associations are stepping up to defend a point of view: that of the freedom of aromas for vaping products.

THE MORE E-CIGARETTE IS REQUIRED, THE MORE THE SMOKING DROPS!

By blindly following the dogmatic and prohibitionist approach of the Direction de santé publique in the fight against smoking, the government of Quebec poses a huge risk to people who have conquered smoking, to those most vulnerable to this addiction and, ultimately, on the health system. It should be remembered that vaping is part of the principle of harm reduction, an approach that has been proven and is used in several other public health issues. The Quebec vaping rights coalition (CDVQ) wanted today to take stock of the situation.

As of 2015, two Quebec cardiologists of international reputation, Dr. Martin Juneau, the Montreal Heart Institute, and Dr. Pierre Poirier, from the University Institute of Cardiology and Pneumology of Quebec, with the endorsement of more than 400 cardiologists from the Association des cardiologues du Québec, had warned the members of the Assembly's Committee on Health and Social Services Quebec National that " the electronic cigarette must be seen, if we play our cards well, as a solution, not a problem ».

In the eyes of these two emeritus specialists, playing your cards well means first and foremost ensuring that the electronic cigarette, " the less toxic product that is the best alternative to tobacco cigarettes “, Is no less accessible than this one. Then, it is to "maintain the flavors", otherwise the electronic cigarette is of no use given its very bad taste.

Drs Juneau and Poirier brought up the example of the public health authority in England which was very reluctant about vaping, but which finally realized the obvious and recognized that this practice lowers the rate of smoking in smokers and that "it does not renormalize tobacco in young people". The same is true in France where there has not been an explosion in tobacco sales among the latter, but rather an incessant decrease. Fact, " the more the electronic cigarette takes in the market, the more smoking decreases. And, among young people, it's the same ».

According to the CDVQ, it is high time that the Quebec public health directorate got out of its small closed circle and listened to clinical physicians who work daily in the field and who have warned elected officials against obsolete studies carried out with products totally outdated that are no longer on the market.
