Known for its rigor and discipline, once again the Japanese people will not compromise with certain principles for the Olympic and Paralympic Games of Tokyo 2020. Indeed, lhe Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games, which will take place in the Japanese capital, has just communicated, by way of pressthat all competition venues will be completely non-smoking and non-vaping.
TOBACCO BUT ALSO THE E-CIGARETTE BANNED FROM COMPETITIONS!
The anti-smoking policy will therefore also apply to e-cigarettes and all other products similar to vaping. At the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Games, the trend was already to ban smoking on indoor competition venues, with smoking areas tolerated outside. For Tokyo 2020, the restriction goes further.
Indeed, during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, it will be forbidden to smoke in the covered venues, but also outside and in the safety zone around the competition venues managed by Tokyo 2020. This drastic policy stems from a amendment to the Japanese law on health promotion, which will be applied on April 1, 2020, and a new regulation of the city hall of Tokyo which wishes to reduce as much as possible the harmful effects of passive smoking.
With the support of the IOC, Tokyo 2020 validated this very strict regulation on tobacco use. The press release says it will be " protect the health of athletes, spectators and officials". A similar smoke-free policy was applied during the Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang in 2018.
Beyond leaving a beautiful and unforgettable mark in the history of Olympism, Tokyo 2020 also wishes " leave a legacy of better public health standards for the whole country.". The hope of seeing a "Cloud Chasing" or "Vape Tricks" event in Tokyo 2020 has unfortunately just evaporated.
