The e-cigarette would not be a gateway to tobacco
Since the e-cigarette has become trendy, it has created controversy: is it an effective technique for those who want to reduce or even put an end to their tobacco consumption or is it just a gateway in tobacco for those who have never smoked? A study by the British National Statistics Office (ONS) sheds light on this question.

According to the first results of this ONS study, e-cigarettes are consumed almost exclusively by smokers and former smokers. More than one in 10 smokers also smokes e-cigarettes (12%), while one in 20 former smokers consumes this type of product. On the other hand, almost no person (0,14%) who has never smoked has vaped.

The ONS specifies in its press release that it has chosen to publish preliminary results “in response to the urgent need for information”. These data were collected between January and March 2014. The complete results will be published in 2015 in the “Adult Smoking Habits in GB” corpus.

In addition, the study specifies that more than one in two smokers use an e-cigarette because they wish to quit smoking, and one in five smokers does so because they think the effects are less dangerous than those of a conventional cigarette.

The study also tells us that the percentage of smokers in the population has gradually decreased since 40 from 46% in 1974 to 19% in 2013. Health measures are to credit this decline. But there is also an electronic cigarette effect. It remains to be seen whether these results will be confirmed in the long term.
