Sniffy: Towards a ban on controversial energy powder

SNIFFY: WHAT IS THIS “WHITE POWDER” THAT IS ALL THE RAGE IN TOBACCO BURNS AND WHICH IS CONSUMED LIKE COCAINE?

The product “Sniffy”, marketed as a powdered energizer, has sparked considerable controversy because of its resemblance to cocaine consumption (the powder is consumed by nasal inhalation, like cocaine!). The Minister of Health, Frédéric Valletoux, recently announced his intention to ban it quickly. This product, sold online and in some tobacco shops at a price of 14,90 euros, contains substances such as l-arginine and caffeine.

Although the brand claims that “Sniffy” complies with current legislation, criticism comes from various professionals, including police unions, tobacconists and addiction specialists. Philippe Coy, president of the Confederation of tobacconists, has expressed firm opposition to its marketing, while Doctor William Lowenstein of SOS Addictions warns against the risks of trivialization of the drug and the dangers for people with heart problems.

The government's reaction is part of a broader context of the fight against products harmful to young people, illustrated by the recent bill aimed at banning single-use electronic cigarettes, adopted at first reading by the National Assembly in December 2023.
