The famous “bridge effect” between e-cigarettes and smoking is a subject that comes up regularly in the news and which contains many “truths”. Today it is a study from Coventry University which announces the possibility of this potential undesirable “effect” in young people.
"POSSIBLE THAT THIS CAN SERVE AS A GATEWAY TO SMOKING"
A new study from a university in the United Kingdom protests against the “cool” effect of e-cigarettes on young people, which could inadvertently make them addicted to nicotine and lead to smoking. While this does not deny the fact that e-cigarettes allow smokers to consume nicotine while avoiding the risk of smoking, the results also show that nearly half of young vapers have never smoked a conventional cigarette.
This research led to Coventry University where 499 students were surveyed show that less than half of users knew that e-cigarettes contained nicotine and could be addictive.
According to Cancer Research UK, 40% of regular smokers start smoking before the age of 16, making teenage smoking a real key topic for public health authorities.
Le Dr. Emmie Fulton, principal investigator of the study, said, " The youth we sampled can use e-cigarettes because they are easier to access than tobacco and can continue to smoke without much worry »
« However, these youth may also not intend to try smoking but could accidentally become addicted to nicotine »She adds. " It is possible that the e-cigarette could act as a gateway to smoking"
As a reminder, it is illegal to sell e-cigarettes to less than 18 years in the UK. Last February, Public Health England recommended that electronic cigarettes be prescribed by the NHS as patches, gums and nicotine inhalers.
