According to US scientists, episodic or regular consumption of electronic cigarettes by schoolchildren and students on average push half of them to smoking in the next two years.
THE E-CIGARETTE: AN "INITIAL DRUG" WHICH GROWS TOWARDS SMOKING
Interested in the characteristics of the electronic cigarette and its impact on the health of individuals, US scientists have come to an unexpected conclusion, an article in the journal American Journal of Medicine.
«The earliest claims that e-cigarettes help quit smoking or reduce the amount of cigarettes consumed were based on some fairly controversial data. We have shown that e-cigarettes cause people who have never smoked to switch to tobacco», Explained the specialist from the University of Pittsburgh, Brian Primack.
According to him and his colleagues, electronic cigarettes are like an “initial drug”. During their research, carried out on a sample of a thousand pupils, students and adults, they succeeded in establishing a balance sheet attesting to the link which exists between the use of electronic cigarettes and smoking.
Thus, about half of all individuals who have tasted electronic cigarettes, became "real" smokers within 1,5 years while guinea pigs not touching electronic cigarettes were only 10% to start smoking.
As Mr Primack points out, it is, for now, difficult to say what drives a good half of e-cigarette addicts to switch to tobacco, but it would be possible to consider several answers, including the need nicotine croissant, advertising, etc…. In addition, scientists have pointed out that even if tobacco is more dangerous for the lungs and for the health of the smoker, the electronic cigarette, for its part, contains a significant amount of carcinogens and toxins.
