In the United States, a CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) report shows that more and more smokers are trying to quit smoking through electronic cigarettes.

24,7% MAKE A TOTAL TRANSITION TO E-CIGARETTE TO LEAVE TOBACCO

Last Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Thursday released a 26-month study conducted on 15 943 smokers adults in the journal Preventing Chronic Disease. The objective was to determine which were the most effective methods to quit smoking among 10 methods identified.

The study in question determined that 74,7% of participants had used multiple methods the last time they attempted to quit smoking. According to the CDC “ Total smoking cessation (65,3%) and reduction in the number of cigarettes smoked (62%) are the most common methods"

Regarding smoking cessation devices,  the most common alternative method used by smokers is the electronic cigarette (35,3%) ahead of the patch, nicotine gum, or other Food and Drug Administration approved stopping methods (25,4%). For those who chose to use the e-cigarette, 24,7% made a complete transition to permanently quitting smoking.

There are obviously other less popular methods of quitting smoking, including: Help from a doctor or health professional (15,2%), use of drugs approved by the FDA such as Champix (12,2%), using a website (7,1%) or a phone line (5,4%).

« Because our data shows that e-cigarettes are used more than FDA-approved drugs in attempts to quit smoking, more research into the safety and efficacy of these is needed.“Said the CDC.

« There is no scientific evidence to show that electronic cigarettes are effective in quitting smoking in the long term. Besides, electronic cigarettes are not approved by the FDA as a smoking cessation aid. "

CDC further states that FDA-approved drugs "helped smokers to quit smoking while, in many cases, increasing the likelihood of success". " We found that most smokers who made the switch to electronic cigarettes or “light” cigarettes did not change completely. These smokers don't really quit "

Still, analysts wonder if this study will be able to rectify the lack of clarity regarding e-cigarettes, whether they can be used or recommended as full-fledged smoking cessation devices.
