La Federal Trade Commission intends to study the marketing of e-cigarettes, a first step in a process that could eventually lead to stricter regulations fast growing industry sales and advertising practices.
The agency will first send inquiries to e-cigarette marketers and use the information as the basis for reporting on the sales, marketing activities, and expenses of this industry which is new and complex.
Since the mid-2000s, the sale of electronic cigarettes has grown rapidly in the United States. The FTC seeks permission to the Office of Management and Budget to collect information on e-cigarette marketing, which is the first step towards carrying out the study. It will post a notice to the Federal Register seeking public comment on the proposed information collection from five large industries and ten small e-cigarette traders.
