E-CIGARETTE: Increased poisoning in children.

More and more children are poisoning themselves with nicotine e-liquids according to the results of a study published in the medical journal Pediatrics . The American poison control centers have observed an increase in emergency calls for children who have swallowed this substance.

Poison centers received 4128 apples concerning children who drank liquid from electronic cigarettes during the study period. They mainly concerned children aged two and under.

Most of the poisonings were taken care of at home. Less than 3% of small victims who were taken to hospital were hospitalized. About 2% of them, either 77 children, have experienced serious health problems, such as fits, coma or difficulty breathing. During the study, one child died and several had serious complications, including comas and convulsions.

E-liquid bottles for electronic cigarettes are dangerous, yet they are often left at the child's fingertips. A real risk to their health.

The study researchers conclude that “ these results highlight the need for better parental awareness of the importance of keeping devices out of the sight and reach of young children ". They also recommend stricter regulation and restrictions from the US Food and Drug Administration.

« The problem represents a real epidemicExplains Gary Smith, pediatric expert at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus (United States). "Parents should be made aware of the importance of keeping electronic cigarettes out of the reach of children ».
