E-CIGARETTE: An opportunity to reduce the number of tobacco-related cancers?

In a report published yesterday on " Cancers in France in 2016", the INCA (National Cancer Institute) dedicates a few pages to the e-cigarette wondering if it represents " an opportunity to reduce the number of tobacco-related cancers". According to the conclusion of this report, the electronic cigarette could represent, in the long term, an additional means of withdrawal to help smokers who decide to stop or reduce their consumption.


E-CIGARETTE, A SOLUTION TO REDUCE THE NUMBER OF TOBACCO-RELATED CANCERS?


In its 20-page report dealing with “Cancers in France in 2016” (available here), the National Cancer Institute has therefore decided to dedicate four (page 16 to 19) to the e-cigarette. First of all, this one reminds us that there is 73 000 deaths per year in France attributable to tobacco more than 60% by cancer.

Based on numerous studies and reliable research, the INCA deals with the prevalence of electronic cigarette users in France before asking whether it really allows smoking cessation. According to the report, a significant reduction in the number of cigarettes smoked is observed in favor of the electronic cigarette with nicotine against patches.

 


WHAT CONCLUSION FOR INCA?


In conclusion, the INCA (National Cancer Institute) declares :

- That in France, the use of electronic cigarettes recorded since 2012 is slowing down.
- That its use is now mainly daily.
- That the multitude of studies and information often contradictory and of variable scientific quality, and the many questions that still need to be answered, could lead smokers to be more hesitant to use it as a substitute.
- That the effort undertaken in the fight against smoking which has been increased with the National Program for the Reduction of Smoking must be deepened by possibly using electronic cigarettes.

The National Cancer Institute ends its report by stating that in This set of measures, the electronic cigarette could represent, in the long term, an additional means of weaning to help smokers who decide to stop or reduce their consumption.
