UK: Attempt to discredit the PHE report

The August 19, the British public health body explained that the electronic cigarette was much less harmful than the traditional cigarette. But a strong suspicion of conflict of interest weighs on the report he has published on the subject.

downloads (1)In an article published this week, the medical magazine The Lancet reveals that a report of the Public Health England (PHE), a body dependent on the Ministry of Health) was based on a study published in 2014 in which 3 of the 11 authors were paid by the manufacturers of electronic cigarettes.

The report of PHE, published the August 19, explained that electronic cigarettes were 20 times less harmful than traditional cigarettes and appealed to doctors to prescribe them to smokers.

The Lancet says that the PHE pulled a "major conclusion" de "remarkably fragile bases". Above all, he did not say anything about this conflict of interest at last week's press conference. On this occasion, the authors of the report stated that, if all British smokers were to spend overnight electronic cigarettes, 75 lives would be saved.

To The Telegraph, which echoes the survey published by The Lancet, the fact that the PHE concealed the source of the numbers used in his report constitutes "a failure in telegraphthe mission [of the organization] protect public health".

Several studies have shown that the fragrances used in electronic cigarettes can cause respiratory problems and affect the immune system, recalls the daily.

Tuesday 1er September, the University of California published a study that suggests that electronic cigarettes "encourage young people to start smoking". In addition, adds The Telegraph, the World Health Organization (WHO) said in August that electronic cigarettes are"serious dangers for teenagers" and that they must be prohibited in public spaces.

For its part, the PHE supports his report stating that an independent expert has verified the conclusions. Also note that Dr. Farsalinos published a post on the subject (view article)
