HEALTH: AP-HP is launching a study to assess the effectiveness of e-cigarettes.

At the same time as the launch of Month without tobacco We learn that Public Assistance - Paris Hospitals will launch a national e-cigarette study. To find out more, this study will aim to assess the effectiveness of e-cigarettes, with or without nicotine, as an aid to smoking cessation.

STUDY AND RESULTS AT THE END OF 4 YEARS?

Public Assistance - Paris Hospitals launches a national study to assess the effectiveness of electronic cigarettes, with or without nicotine, as an aid to smoking cessation, compared to a drug, according to a press release published on October 30 2018, day of the launch of the “Tobacco Free Month”.

The number of “vapers” in France is estimated at around 1,7 million in 2016, but knowledge about the effectiveness of electronic cigarettes and their possible risks is lacking, notes the AP-HP in its press release. The study ECSMOKE, funded by the health authorities, aims to recruit at least 650 smokers (at least 10 cigarettes per day) from 18 to 70 years wishing to quit smoking.

These participants will be taken care of in 12 hospital tobacco consultations (Angers, Caen, Clamart, Clermont-Ferrand, La Rochelle, Lille Lyon, Nancy, Nîmes, Paris, Poitiers, Villejuif) for 6 months. Tobacco specialists will provide an electronic cigarette with adjustable power with liquids flavored "blond tobacco" with or without nicotine, tablets of varenicline (a drug to aid in smoking cessation) or its placebo version.

Participants will be divided into three groups, one taking placebo tablets and nicotine-free vaping liquids, the second taking placebo tablets and liquids with nicotine, and the last group taking varenicline tablets in combination with nicotine-free liquids. Smoking cessation should occur within 7 to 15 days after starting the study, with follow-up for 6 months.

In addition to the effectiveness of vaping, the study will attempt to measure the associated risks, especially among those over 45, an age from which the majority of smokers already have a health problem linked to their smoking. The results are expected 4 years after the start of the study, and “ could help determine if e-cigarettes can be listed as an approved weaning aid“, Indicates the AP-HP.
