HEALTH: AP-HP is still looking for 500 volunteers for the ECSMOKE study on e-cigarettes

If the study ECSMOKE which must evaluate the effectiveness of the e-cigarette started in October 2018, there is still a lack of volunteers. AP-HP needs 500 smokers ready to quit. As an aid to smoking cessation, volunteers will have the right to electronic cigarettes, with or without nicotine, in order to find out if the latter can be effective in stopping smoking.

ALREADY 130 PARTICIPANTS, THE STUDY NEEDS 500 MORE PEOPLE!

Can the electronic cigarette be a solution to quitting smoking? It is to answer this question that the Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris is launching the ECSMOKE study to assess and compare the effectiveness of electronic cigarettes compared to a drug, varenicline, in stopping smoking. . The objective is to include in the study a minimum of 650 people smoking at least 10 cigarettes per day, aged 18 to 70 years and wishing to stop smoking.

The study launched last October has already included more than 130 people, but more than 500 are still missing to carry out this study coordinated by the hospital Pitie-Salpetriere in Paris. A study « very regulated«  ensures the Professor Berlin at the origin of the project which receives volunteers at the clinical investigation unit of Pitié-Salpétrière.

One of the participants claims to have stopped smoking with a lot of ease« . The 60-year-old smoked 40 cigarettes a day for 15 years and has tried to quit smoking several times without success. « I missed a kick to the buttocks, this time I'm really motivated« . One of his motivations is not to disappoint Professor Berlin, who receives him every two or three weeks. « I want to be able to tell him to his face, I haven't smoked, and as soon as I feel I'm going to crack I think of the doctor and the urge passes." This participant is 47 days without smoking, the next goal is three months. His final goal: to be able to do without the electronic cigarette after six months, at the end of his follow-up.

Volunteers will be able to visit one of the 11 hospitals or in the dispensary partners spread across 12 cities in France -Angers, Caen, Clamart, Clermont-Ferrand, La Rochelle, Lille, Lyon, Nancy, Nimes, Paris, Poitiers, Villejuif. Participants will be followed during 6 months after stopping smoking. The results of this first study are expected about four years after the start of inclusions. They could help to determine if e-cigarettes can be included in devices approved for smoking cessation.
