After Republicans blocked 3 amendments from anti-vaping lawmakers just a few weeks ago, Democrats stormed back yesterday with a new panel of proposals against vaping. The Californians are putting the cover back so that the vape is absolutely classified as a tobacco product! THURSDAY JULY 16, 2015 - IT'S AGAIN FOR A ROUND!
A request has been made for 6 amendments be voted as part of the new Health Funding Law. We remind you that the Democrats control the 2 chambers to date… These amendments aim to recognize the electronic cigarette as a tobacco product, and that the legal smoking age be raised to 21 years! On this last point, moreover, the tobacco industry opposes them with fierce resistance.
What is there in this Pandora's box? ?
- The ban on tobacco and any affiliated product (therefore vaping) from Californian schools.
- Increase the areas where smoking is prohibited, especially for workspaces.
- Allow local authorities to create taxes on any tobacco product, including vaping.
Anti-smoking legislators point out that tougher laws on tobacco products will save money on substantial health care spending. Health Insurance for the Poor in California (Medi-Cal) reports 3,5 Billion dollars of expenditure per year for the management of tobacco-related diseases.
The creators of these amendments are joining well-known colleges of medical specialists such as AHA (College of American Cardiologists), ALA (college of pulmonologists), as well as other lobby groups. Republicans regret not having time to analyze all these proposals and cast doubts on a possible positive impact for the community, not to mention their feelings of being forced into their hands.
A fee of 2 $ is not yet included in these amendmentsbut it should be noted that a list of petitioners has collected the number of signatures requested for this fee to be considered in future amendments, or even earlier in a special session!
