SINGAPORE: Towards an increase in the legal age for possession and use of e-cigarettes.

While Singapore is already banned from importing, distributing or selling e-cigarettes, a public consultation could make matters even more complicated. Indeed, the proposed changes to the Tobacco Act would be much more drastic by increasing the legal age for the purchase, use and possession of vaporizers and electronic cigarettes.

THE E-CIGARETTE NOT WELCOME TO SINGAPORE?

A public consultation that took place on June 13 and of which we do not yet have the results put forward a proposal to increase the minimum legal age for smoking and for buying, using or possessing vaporizers or electronic cigarettes. According to the declaration of the Singapore Ministry of Health (MOH), the legal age would increase from 18 to 21 and gradually increase over three years. (it would be increased to 19 years after the first year, 20 years the following and 21 years after the third year).

According to the ministry, in Singapore 95% of smokers have tried cigarettes before the age of 21, and 83% have become regular smokers before that same age. The proposed change is intended to directly affect the ability of young people between the ages of 18 and 20 to purchase tobacco products.

In addition, the health ministry said it seeks to cut off any possibility of circumventing existing rules regarding vaporizers and ENDS. While the importation, distribution, sale and offering for sale of these is already prohibited, this is not the case for purchase, use and possession.
